NCIV Network News: Letter from the President April 2012
By Jennifer Clinton, President, NCIV
April 2012
Dear Colleagues:
My first two months on the job as NCIV's president has been an incredible whirlwind. I have had the wonderful opportunity to speak with over 50 CIVs, five national program agencies, a dozen colleagues at the Department of State, a number of current and former board members, and two groups of International Visitors and their ELO's. These conversations have been invaluable. I am discovering the incredible nuances and complexity of the NCIV network and what it takes to make the IVLP the world-class effort that it is.
NCIV Network News: Super CIVs: What to do When Tornadoes Strike
By Mark Rebstock, Vice President, NCIV and
Phillip Ives, Program Officer, Meridian International Center
April 2012
The uncertainty caused by unforeseen weather might have led some to shrug their shoulders and cancel plans. Jerry Jordan and the North Texas Council for International Visitors got to work. Participants in the U.S. Foreign Policy: The Decision-Making Process program— a 24-person multiregional IVLP—gathered at the Dallas Fort Worth airport early this April. The visitors were preparing to board a flight for San Francisco on the final leg of their visit when tornadoes struck the Dallas area. After the storm passed, program organizers at the Meridian International Center and in the U.S. Department of State's Office of International Visitors hoped that the group would be able to continue on later in the evening, but the storms had shut down the airport. A deluge of massive hail stones had accompanied the storms; all the planes at the airport had to be inspected for damage before returning to service, grounding the group in Dallas for a full day.
Jerry Jordan and the North Texas Council for International Visitors sprang into action.

Citizen diplomats understand that connecting with international visitors breaks down preconceived notions we sometimes carry with us about other people and cultures. And sometimes this process happens in sudden, surprising and unexpected ways. The process is even more striking when you are in charge of hosting heads of state and government for the President of the United States.

NCIV Network News: The 2012 NCIV National Meeting: Measuring Impact One Story at a Time
By Zac Carr, Program Associate, Communications & Advocacy, NCIV
February/March 2012
The 2012 NCIV National Meeting focused on demonstrating the impact of international exchange, global engagement, and citizen diplomacy. Impact can be measured in many ways. While statistics or numeric metrics are often the first form of impact that come to mind, they are not always the most potent. A single story has the potential to be the most dramatic illustration of impact.
The theme of this year's NCIV National Meeting, "One Story at a Time: The Impact of Citizen Diplomacy," was a celebration of the power of a single story.
