NCIV Membership Basic Benefits:
All NCIV Members receive the following basic benefits:

  • Education and Training: NCIV National Meetings, Regional Meetings, workshops, and seminars offer education and training on topics important to NCIV members. Members participate actively and display promotional materials at these events. Members also receive a discounted registration rate for these events.

  • Advocacy: NCIV educates members of the U.S. Congress on the value of international exchange and the contributions of citizen diplomacy. NCIV actively advocates for adequate funding to support exchange activities. NCIV issues timely Action Alerts to its members containing late breaking updates about pending policy and funding decisions. Sample letters and phone scripts for responding are provided.

  • Leadership Opportunities: National level participation opportunities are offered on the NCIV Board of Directors and various working committees, as well as in conjunction with trainings and conferences.

  • Resource Materials: Members are entitled to a complimentary copy of all NCIV publications, including the Financial Management Primer, International Exchange Programs for Teachers, and Building an Effective Board of Directors. Members also receive copies of the annual NCIV Membership Directory and a subscription to the monthly NCIV Network News, a newsletter featuring information about NCIV members and issues affecting the field of international education and exchange. Members are encouraged to submit articles for inclusion. NCIV also produces other publications such as training manuals on nonprofit management, programming, and advocacy that are specifically developed for our members.

  • Promotion: All organizational members are listed in the annual NCIV Membership Directory and on the NCIV website.

Community Organization (CIV)

Definition

A nonprofit organization or university that hosts international visitors, is committed to the mission of NCIV, and organizes programs for participants in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.

Membership Procedure

  • Submit a completed Provisional Community Member application form and $200 application fee

  • NCIV Board reviews application and approves or denies provisional membership.

  • After a minimum of one year as a Provisional Community Member, apply for full Community Membership status.

  • Submit a completed Community Member application form and a $500 application fee.*

  • A site visit will be conducted by an NCIV staff or board member.

  • NCIV Board approves or denies membership.

*Applications must be received eight weeks prior to the next board meeting to provide sufficient time for a site visit and review of the application by the NCIV Board of Directors.

Membership Responsibilities

  • Submit Community Impact Report form annually.

  • Maintain current contact information in the Online Resource Directory (ORD).

  • Meet the NCIV membership standards as defined in the Standards & Guidelines publication. If it is determined a Community Member is not meeting the specified standards, the Community Member will be put on probation for six months. If the Community Member is not in compliance within six months, it will become an Associate Member, as determined by the NCIV Board of Directors.

Benefits

  • Basic NCIV benefits.

  • Eligibility to apply for grants funded by the Office of International Visitors, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, such as Community Partnership Grants, Local Initiative Grants, and Member Exchange Grants. Provisional Members are only eligible to apply for National and Regional Meeting participation grants.

Annual Dues

Based on the organization's staff size. A ''Paid Staff'' organization pays total salary hours of 20 hours or more per week for work dedicated to international exchange related activities. If the organization pays for fewer than 20 hours of work on international exchange activities per week, the organization is considered ''Volunteer.'' If staff salaries are paid by a university, the organization is considered a ''University'' member.

National Program Agency (NPA)

Definition

A nonprofit organization that brings international visitors to the United States for professional meetings or training opportunities and has a current cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State's Office of International Visitors.

Benefits

  • Basic NCIV benefits.

  • Invitations for all staff to attend the annual National Programmers Workshop and selected other meetings, workshops, and training programs.

Annual Dues

Based on the number of staff directly involved with international exchange activities.

Staff of 6-10 $600
Staff of 11-25 $800
Staff of 25 or more $1,000

Associate Member

Definition

An organization that hosts international visitors and shares NCIV's commitment to promoting excellence in citizen diplomacy. (Associate Members are not eligible for grants administered by NCIV from the U.S. Department of State's Office of International Visitors.)
