This
edition previews the 2006 NCIV National Meeting and takes
a brief look at the history of NCIV, which celebrates its
45th Anniversary in 2006. Profiles of the two featured
speakers at the 45th Anniversary Alumni Leadership Luncheon,
H.E. Abdoulaye Diop, Ambassador of the Republic of Mali, and
H.E. Helgi Ágústsson, Ambassador of Iceland.
Other highlights, include guest speakers Chris Johns,
Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic magazine;
Richard Florida, best-selling author; Senator Norm Coleman
(R-MN); and Representative David Price (D-NC).

The 2006 NCIV National Meeting issue is here!
This edition covers the highlights of this year's National
Meeting, beginning with National Geographic editor-in-chief
Chris Johns' "Global Connections" opening presentation
and wrapping up with speeches from two IVLP alumni, H.E. Abdoulaye
Diop, Ambassador of Mali, and H.E. Helgi Ágústsson,
Ambassador of Iceland. This issue also contains a variety
of perspectives from around the NCIV network, as it features
articles and reflections submitted by CIV, NPA, and U.S. Department
of State National Meeting participants, and other special
guests.

This issue details the inaugural CIV program
officers conference call (a new feature NCIV will facilitate
on the fourth Thursday of each month). This edition also features
a story by NCIV intern Monya Hudsick who tells of her experiences
hosting International Visitors as a child and how those encounters
have affected her career choices. The April newsletter also
features two vignettes by Don Goldman, a volunteer programmer
for the Santa Fe Council on International Relations, about
his experiences with IVs, as well as an article by an expert
on philanthropy, Phil Buchanan.

This edition bids farewell to NCIV’s
“accountant on Tuesdays,” Eleanor Lloyd, who
retired last month after nearly 10 years of service to NCIV.
It also reports on the Edward R. Murrow Journalism Fellows
Program, a new initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s
International Visitor Leadership Program, as well as profiles
Mrs. Amy Aldrich Bedford, a volunteer of over 20 years for
the World Affairs Council of Oregon. Finally, the May issue
reports on NCIV staff members’ recent visits with
the national program agencies in Washington, and the suggestions
for improved communication and working relationships between
NPAs and CIVs which resulted from those meetings.

The June edition details the main events
of the 2006 NCIV Southern Regional Meeting. This issue also
puts a volunteer spotlight on two outstanding volunteers,
Alma Gray and Patricia Gehri, at the International Council
of Central Florida, Inc.. Third, the NCIV salutes Jerry
Leach and the work he has done in the area of citizen diplomacy.
Dr. Leach retired as President of the World Affairs Councils
of America on June 30, 2006. Jerry had been the WACA president
since 1996.

The
July edition details the King of Rock n' Roll's role
in citizen diplomacy and the National Summit on Citizen
Diplomacy. Yes, Elvis was a citizen diplomat. Anti-Americanism
abroad prompted a push for citizen diplomacy in news
agencies such as the New York Times. The NCIV
board met and had a productive meeting in Illinois.
Finally, the NCIV Culture Box Support Project was launched
in July. |

The
2006 NCIV Western Regional Meeting is recapped along
with photos of the event in Denver, Colorado. Also,
September is National Passport Month, Mark Overmann
details the how seeing the world benefits American citizens
at home. NCIV welcomes three new members in August,
the Council for International Visitors in Collier (Naples,
FL), Idaho Center for International Visitors (Boise,
ID), and North Texas Council for International Visitors(Dallas,
TX). |

The
September edition tells of two compelling stories in
which the lives of two International Visitors took dramatic
turns. The front page article, "Above and Beyond
the Call of Duty," examines each event. Inside
the edition lies articles on Roger Andrews, an award-winning
volunteer, and Business for Diplomatic Action founder,
Keith Reinhard, who has joined the fight against the
image known as "The Ugly American." |

This
edition features an article by Mary Dennis, Executive
Director of the Council for International Visitors of
Greater New Orleans, on the lessons learned from Hurricane
Katrina about emergency and disaster preparedness.
The issue also features a profile of the organization
Americans for Informed Democracy, two different articles
on grant opportunities for NCIV members, and a profile
of two outstanding interns working with the Tulsa Global
Alliance. Finally, the October newsletter introduces
Mr. Buffy, the feline citizen diplomat, whose coloring
book adventures are available for purchase through NCIV. |

This
issue touts the upcoming 2007 NCIV National Meeting
and the the corporate sponsorship provided by the Boeing
Company for the meeting, to take place February 14-17,
2007. It also reports on the 2006 National Programmers
Workshop, held at the Academy for Educational Development.
This edition contains a profile of the Association
for International Practical Training, which is offering
NCIV members fee-for-service opportunities, as well
as a report on the premier of a documentary on the life
of Senator J. William Fulbright hosted by NCIV.
A review of two books on international business communication
and an article on young professionals groups round out
the November issue. |

The registration deadline for the 2007 NCIV National
Meeting is January 12! This issue provides more previews
of the National Meeting, including a profile of Roger
Dow, President and CEO of the Travel Industry Association
of America, who will act as the featured speaker at
the Citizen Diplomacy Luncheon on February 16. The
December issue also includes a review of a new volume
from the Public Diplomacy Council, America's Dialogue
with the World, stories of contributions from
interns around the NCIV network, as well as information
on the newest versions of eCIV and eNPA.
